[2021] Side Events at UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP 26)

الخميس, 04 November 2021 - 1:00pm to الثلاثاء, 09 November 2021 - 11:30am

Description

The United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties - COP 26 - will take place under the Presidency of the Government of United Kingdom in partnership with the Government of Italy from 1 to 12 November 2021. The conference is designed to take the next crucial steps in the UN climate change and action processes. The objectives of COP 26 are as follows:

  1. Secure global net zero by mid-century and keep 1.5 degrees within reach
    • Accelerate the phase-out of coal
    • Curtail deforestation
    • Speed up the switch to electric vehicles
    • Encourage investment in renewables
  2. Adapt to protect communities and natural habitats
    • Protect and restore ecosystems
    • Build defences, warning systems, and resilient infrastructure and agriculture to avoid loss of homes, livelihoods, and even lives
  3. Mobilise finance
  4. Work together to deliver
    • Finalise the Paris rulebook
    • Accelerate action to tackle the climate crisis through collaboration between governments, businesses, and civil society

In this context, the United Nations Office for Sustainable Development (UNOSD) will be organizing 3 side events during the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP 26). The side events will be a part of the SDG Pavilion hosted by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) and the Korea Pavilion hosted by the Government of Republic of Korea to provide an interactive space where policymakers and other stakeholders can share ideas and best practices to leverage tangible action for climate action and sustainable development. The Side Event #2 and #3 will be conducted via hybrid format in which online participation and streaming services are provided.

Side Event #1

"The role of fossil fuel subsidy reform (FFSR) and renewable energy investment for a green recovery: Building capacities for fossil fuel to renewable energy (FFRE) transition"

4 November 2021 / 12:15 PM - 1:30 PM / SDG Pavilion of COP 26, The Scottish Event Campus (SEC), Glasgow, United Kingdom

The side event will integrate an introductory presentation on renewable energy’s contribution to green recovery, followed by presentations of good practices by countries. These will be followed by a presentation of UNOSD FFRE trainings that have been delivered in the past. Participants will be asked to contribute to the discussion by presenting their needs in relation to green recovery and fossil fuel subsidy reform (FFSR) and renewable energy investment. Among the questions participants will be asked are: What are the challenges and obstacles to FFSR and renewable energy investment? Why aren’t governments doing more? What do they need to act? Where are the gaps? What can UNOSD do to help fill those gaps?

Side Event #2

"Green Deals to Accelerate Ecosystem Restoration, Climate Action and Sustainable Development Goals Implementation"

4 November 2021 / 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM / Korea Pavilion of COP 26, The Scottish Event Campus (SEC), Glasgow, United Kingdom

Restoration of degraded land is essential for keeping global climate promises. Actions that prevent, halt and reverse degradation can deliver one-third of the mitigation that is needed by 2030 to keep global temperatures below 2°C. Ecosystem supports all life on earth including people. Protection and revival of ecosystem can help not only to combat climate change, but also to end poverty and prevent the collapse of biodiversity. Under the backdrop of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030) and the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), UNOSD will organize a side event which focuses on accelerating ecosystem restoration, climate action and sustainable development through green deals. The event will incorporate presentations from the countries on their experiences, best practices, and lessons learned on Green Deal as a means to accelerate nature crisis responses and realize the SDGs.

Side Event #3

"Advancing Greenhouse Gas Inventory Systems"

9 November 2021 / 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM / Korea Pavilion of COP 26, The Scottish Event Campus (SEC), Glasgow, United Kingdom

UNOSD has played an active role in the capacity building of countries in the Asia-Pacific Region and beyond to tackle climate change issues and enrich governments’ mitigation tools by hosting a series of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory System Training Workshops since 2018. A national greenhouse gas inventory is a valuable tool for accumulating and managing national carbon emissions data and serves as a cornerstone of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Consequently, the inventory provides evidence-base for the purpose of understanding development trends, improving resource management and energy efficiency, and developing policies and programmes to address climate change. During the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), UNOSD will organize a side event which focuses on developing and managing greenhouse gas inventory system as an extension of UNOSD's GHG Inventory System Training Workshop. The event will incorporate presentations from the countries on their experiences, best practices, and lessons learned on utilizing the GHG inventory system as a means to accelerate progress for achieving carbon neutrality and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
