Background

With an urgent call-to-action voiced by during the High-Level Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on Zero Waste on 30 March 2023, the international community recognized the pressing need to address the escalating crisis of waste management. Growing levels of waste and pollution are jeopardizing our ecosystems and affecting human health globally. With 2 billion tons of municipal solid waste generated annually and projections indicating a potential doubling of this figure by 2050, the severity of the issue cannot be overstated. Stressing the necessity for immediate and concerted action, the Secretary-General outlined a comprehensive strategy to combat waste on multiple fronts with an emphasis on the crucial role of governmental bodies and private entities in implementing sustainable waste management.

Against this backdrop, the United Nations Office for Sustainable Development (UNOSD) under the Division for Sustainable Development Goals (DSDG) of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC) will organize a webinar on Zero Waste on Friday, 29 March 2024 to raise public awareness and mobilize key stakeholders worldwide on the urgency of transitioning towards zero waste through improved waste management systems and policies, and best practices on resource circularity.

Objectives

The objective of this webinar is to convene key stakeholders on waste management to exchange knowledge, best practices, and innovative solutions for achieving a zero-waste future and resource circularity across national to local levels. The webinar will be a platform to share insights on addressing current waste crisis and its implications on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and discuss about next steps on planning realistic strategies and resources to accelerate global progress on circular economy.

Organizers

This Webinar is co-organized by the United Nations Office for Sustainable Development (UNOSD) under the Division for Sustainable Development Goals (DSDG) of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC)
