[2018] International Conference on Climate Finance and Industry

الجمعة, 02 November 2018 - 3:00am

Description

Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change are historic achievements. Together, they set universal transformative objectives for embarking all countries on sustainable and low-carbon pathways. SDG 13 focuses on climate change, with reference to the implementation of the Paris Agreement including enhanced resilience and adaptive capacity. SDG 11(Make Cities Inclusive, Safe, Resilient and Sustainable) especially focuses on mitigation and adaptation to climate change and resilience to disasters through its targets.

There is growing acknowledgement of the deep interdependency between SDGs and the Paris Agreement. Sustainable development cannot be achieved if climate change reaches catastrophic levels, and effective climate change adaptation and mitigation actions cannot make progress unless national policies and governance structures are improved in a more sustainable way.

To implement SDGs and Paris Agreement in a more integrated way, we need to focus on cities where more than half of the world’s population reside in urban areas. Urban dwellers in cities account for 60-80 percent of global energy consumption and consequently generate as much as 75 percent of the energy-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Cities are also rapidly becoming more vulnerable to climate related hazards, which are rising in frequency and severity with increased climate variability. Building more inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable city will contribute to the achievement of SDGs and Paris Agreement.

In this context, UNOSD will host a session on “Achieving Climate Change Action and the Sustainable Development Goals through more Inclusive, Safe, Resilient and Sustainable city” during 2018 International Conference on Climate Finance and Industry, taking place in Incheon, Republic of Korea, on 1 November 2018. The UNOSD-led session will be held on 1 November 2018, from 14:15 to 15:45.

The International Conference on Climate Finance and Industry will be organized and hosted by Incheon Metropolitan City to raise awareness and promote knowledge sharing on climate change policies and practices in the public and private sectors since Incheon Metropolitan City has been playing an important role as a hub for international cooperation and sustainable development as the host of the secretariat of the Green Climate Fund.
